How Matching Works

Similarity Scoring™ & Business DNA Matching™

The engine doesn't compare you to "companies your size in your industry." It finds organizations that think, grow, hire, communicate, and operate like you — then benchmarks against them.

Five-Dimensional DNA Matching

Business Archetype

Weight: 25%

Structural identity — how the organization is organized to deliver value

Growth Archetype

Weight: 20%

Growth engine — how the organization acquires and converts customers

Workforce Archetype

Weight: 20%

Talent architecture — how the organization hires, develops, and deploys people

Communication Archetype

Weight: 15%

Interaction model — how the organization communicates internally and with customers

Operational Archetype

Weight: 20%

Execution engine — how the organization systematizes and automates operations

Similarity Score Formula

Weighted cosine similarity across five normalized archetype vectors

Similarity(A, B) = Σ (wd × match(archetypedA, archetypedB)) × complexity_adjustment(A, B)
Where:
wd = dimension weight (25%, 20%, 20%, 15%, 20%)
match() = 1.0 (exact), 0.5 (adjacent), 0.1 (distant)
complexity_adjustment = normalizes for revenue band, locations, employees
Required for peer set inclusion:
≥70% similarity + same or adjacent revenue band
Minimum peer set size:
12 organizations (expands to adjacent archetypes if needed)

Peer Set Matching Tiers

90–100%
Near-Identical Match

Organizations that share your exact Business DNA™ profile. Best for detailed operational benchmarks.

Typical peer count: ~3–8
80–89%
Strong Match

Organizations with minor archetype variance. Best for strategic benchmarks and growth comparisons.

Typical peer count: ~12–30
70–79%
Relevant Match

Organizations sharing 3+ archetypes. Best for aspirational benchmarks from adjacent profiles.

Typical peer count: ~25–80
<70%
Not in Peer Set

Organizations too different to produce statistically valid comparisons. Excluded from benchmarks.

Typical peer count: N/A
Proprietary Similarity Scores

Four Proprietary Similarity Scores™

Beyond DNA matching, the engine computes four independent similarity dimensions — each producing a 0–100 score that determines peer set composition and benchmark precision.

BSS0–100 Score

Business Similarity Score™

How similar is your organizational structure to the peer set?

Scoring Formula
BSS = Σ(wᵢ × normalize(|your_metricᵢ − peer_metricᵢ|)) × industry_adjustment

Measures structural similarity across revenue band, headcount, location count, service lines, and operational complexity — normalized against the full corpus to produce a single 0–100 score.

Input Dimensions
Revenue band proximityFTE headcount similarityLocation count parityService line overlapOperational complexity matchRegulatory burden alignment
Application
Determines which organizations are structurally comparable before DNA archetype matching begins. A high BSS (>80) + high DNA Similarity = the tightest peer set.
Replication Barrier
Requires the full corpus of anonymized organizational structure data. Without 5,000+ organizations across 50+ industries, the normalization curves and industry adjustments are statistically unreliable.
ISS0–100 Score

Industry Similarity Score™

How closely does your industry profile match the peer set's?

Scoring Formula
ISS = (NAICS_proximity × 0.4) + (sub_industry_overlap × 0.25) + (customer_type_match × 0.20) + (regulatory_similarity × 0.15)

Measures industry alignment using NAICS-based proximity, sub-industry specialization, customer type overlap, and regulatory environment similarity — producing a 0–100 industry affinity score.

Input Dimensions
NAICS code proximity (distance in hierarchy)Sub-industry specialization overlapCustomer type distribution (B2B/B2C/B2G/DTC)Regulatory framework alignmentRevenue model similarity (subscription, transactional, hybrid)
Application
Ensures industry benchmarks compare businesses in genuinely similar markets. Two organizations with identical DNA but different industries (e.g., retail healthcare vs. home healthcare) are identified as structurally similar but market-different.
Replication Barrier
Industry normalization weights require thousands of cross-industry comparisons to calibrate. The NAICS proximity scoring is unique to the platform's multi-dimensional matching architecture.
WSS0–100 Score

Workforce Similarity Score™

How similar is your workforce structure and maturity?

Scoring Formula
WSS = (maturity_proximity × 0.35) + (composition_similarity × 0.25) + (digital_adoption_parity × 0.20) + (talent_architecture_match × 0.20)

Compares workforce composition, maturity level, digital adoption stage, and talent architecture to produce a 0–100 workforce affinity score that determines which organizations share your workforce profile.

Input Dimensions
Workforce maturity stage proximityDigital Team Member™ count similarityFTE-to-digital ratio comparisonAdoption breadth (% of available roles deployed)Utilization depth (feature activation rate)Expansion velocity alignment
Application
Powers the 'Most Common Digital Team Members™' and 'Most Successful Workforce Configuration™' outputs. Only organizations with WSS >75 are included in workforce-specific benchmark comparisons.
Replication Barrier
Maturity stage transition probabilities and per-stage composition norms are learned from the deployment corpus. Without longitudinal workforce data, these norms are pure speculation.
BIS0–100 Score

Business Impact Similarity Score™

How similar is your business impact profile to the peer set?

Scoring Formula
BIS = Σ(w_d × (1 − |your_impact_d − peer_impact_d| / max_impact_d)) with dimension weights learned from outcome correlation analysis

Measures alignment across five Business Impact dimensions to identify organizations achieving similar outcomes — enabling outcome-based peer comparisons and aspirational benchmarking.

Input Dimensions
Revenue Protected™ proximityCapacity Created™ similarityCash Flow Improved™ alignmentExpenses Reduced™ parityEfficiency Gains™ matchOverall Business Impact Score™ proximity
Application
Identifies organizations achieving similar outcomes — and distinguishes between 'organizations like you' (DNA-similar) and 'organizations performing like you' (impact-similar), which are often different sets.
Replication Barrier
Impact dimension weights are learned from correlation analysis across the full outcome corpus. The weight distribution varies by industry, archetype, and maturity — a dataset that only grows with platform usage.

Composite Similarity Index™ (CSI™)

The four similarity scores combine with the Business DNA™ Similarity Score to produce the Composite Similarity Index™ — a single 0–100 metric that determines an organization's primary, secondary, and aspirational peer sets.

Matching Algorithm

Matching Algorithm Specification

A five-phase computational pipeline that transforms a Business DNA™ assessment into ranked, scored peer sets — running at sub-second latency even at 10,000+ organizations.

1

Structural Filter

Filter the full organizational corpus to candidates within the same or adjacent revenue band and similar organizational complexity (location count ± 1 tier, headcount within 3x range). This eliminates structurally incomparable organizations before any DNA comparison.

Complexity: O(n) — single-pass filter over n organizations
Output: Candidate set — typically 200–800 organizations from a 10K corpus
2

DNA Similarity Computation

Compute the Business DNA™ Similarity Score for every candidate using weighted cosine similarity across five normalized archetype vectors. This is the most computationally intensive phase — every candidate receives a full 5D similarity computation.

Complexity: O(c × 5) where c = candidate count — 1,000 to 4,000 operations at 10K corpus
Output: DNA-similar candidates with similarity scores (0–100)
3

Multi-Dimensional Similarity Scoring

For candidates with DNA Similarity ≥ 70%, compute BSS, ISS, WSS, and BIS — the four additional proprietary similarity scores. These refine the peer set by identifying organizations that are structurally, market-wise, workforce-wise, and outcome-wise similar.

Complexity: O(p × 4) where p = DNA-similar candidates above threshold
Output: Full 5-score profile for each qualifying candidate
4

Composite Similarity Index™ Ranking

Compute CSI™ for all qualifying candidates and rank them. The top N form the primary peer set. CSI™ thresholds determine peer set buckets: Primary (CSI™ ≥ 60), Secondary (50–59), Aspirational (40–49).

Complexity: O(p log p) — sort by CSI™
Output: Ranked peer sets with composite scores, ready for benchmark computation
5

Benchmark Computation & Output Generation

For each peer set bucket, compute all benchmark metrics (averages, distributions, percentiles, top-decile values). Generate all six canonical outputs. Apply minimum peer-set-size validation (≥12 orgs); if insufficient, expand to adjacent archetypes.

Complexity: O(p × m) where m = metrics computed (~50 benchmarks)
Output: Complete Businesses Like Yours™ output set

Algorithm Safeguards & Edge Cases

Insufficient Peer Set

If fewer than 12 organizations meet the ≥70% DNA similarity threshold, the algorithm expands to adjacent archetypes (one archetype variation per dimension, up to 2 dimensions at a time) until a statistically meaningful peer set is formed. Expansion is transparent — the report notes when benchmarks include adjacent-archetype organizations.

Novel Archetype Combination

When an organization has an archetype combination never seen before, the algorithm uses nearest-neighbor matching in the 5D archetype space, weighted by dimension importance. Benchmarks are flagged as 'initial — confidence building as corpus grows.' Confidence scores are lower for novel combinations.

Outlier Revenue Band

Organizations in the lowest or highest revenue bands have naturally smaller peer sets. The algorithm applies relaxed revenue-band matching (up to 2 bands away) and increased weight on non-revenue similarity dimensions (DNA, workforce, industry).

Multi-Industry Organization

Organizations operating across multiple NAICS codes receive a weighted industry profile. The ISS computation uses industry-weighted averaging. For benchmarks, the algorithm can produce per-industry comparisons when the organization has ≥30% revenue in secondary industries.

Rapid Change Organization

Organizations undergoing rapid growth, M&A, or business model transformation are flagged. Their historical benchmarks include a 'trajectory adjustment' that accounts for the rate of change. Peer sets are updated quarterly to reflect their evolving profile.

Temporal Drift Detection

The algorithm monitors peer set stability quarter over quarter. If an organization's peer set shifts beyond a threshold (indicating business evolution), the algorithm triggers a re-assessment recommendation and adjusts benchmark continuity reporting.

Core Benchmarks

Industry Benchmarking™ & Workforce Benchmarking™

Two of the six core benchmarking categories — comparing financial structure and workforce maturity against organizations that share your Business DNA™ profile.

Industry Benchmarking™

Financial and operational metrics benchmarked against your DNA-matched peer set. Every metric is complexity-adjusted — a $50M multi-site enterprise isn't compared to a $2M single-location business, even if they share an archetype.

The Compounding Data Moat

Why this engine becomes harder to replicate with every assessment

Network Effect

Every new organization increases the peer set for every existing customer. Precision scales with sample size — and sample size grows with every sale. A new entrant starts with zero data.

Proprietary Data

Business DNA™ archetypes, scoring models, and matching logic are unique to this platform. Even if competitors copy the concept, they cannot copy the dataset.

Switching Cost

Once an organization can see exactly how it compares to 50+ similar businesses, it can't unsee it. The benchmarking engine creates a data dependency that strengthens retention.

Predictive Advantage

As the dataset grows, the engine begins predicting — which workforce configuration will produce the highest impact, which expansion will trigger next, which benchmark will shift.

Flywheel Effect

More Assessments
Larger Peer Sets
More Precise Benchmarks
More Valuable Reports
Higher Conversion
More Assessments

The Businesses Like Yours™ engine is not just a feature — it's the strategic core of the Business Impact Platform™. Each Business DNA™ assessment, each workforce deployed, each impact measurement compounds the data advantage. The result: a proprietary intelligence engine that improves with every customer and becomes geometrically harder to replicate with each passing month.
